Safeguarding Oregon Against Trump’s Vengeful Administration
Since last November’s election, we have seen Democratic governors, attorneys general, and state legislators take action to minimize the reach and scope of Trump’s cruel, disorganized vendetta on the “radical liberals”. Here in Oregon, Attorney General Dan Rayfield has taken action alongside his fellow AGs to file lawsuits against such White House efforts as …
- dismantling the Department of Education,
- defunding the Health and Human Services Department,
- and stopping the mass federal layoffs that have thrown both our government and our state unemployment systems into chaos.
But where’s our governor on all this?
- Governor Tina Kotek has been far less outspoken than many of her counterparts in other blue states.
- On Trump’s inauguration day, she handed him an easy victory by ordering flags to be flown at full mast despite the country’s ongoing grief for the loss of former President Jimmy Carter.
- She even said in a letter that she would “stay committed to collaboration” with the administration as long as they did not infringe on the values of Oregonians. We can’t afford to have a governor who looks like a push-over to Trump.
Granted, since Trump’s inauguration, Kotek HAS spoken about adjusting the state budget to account for anticipated shortfalls to things like education and other public funding. She’s reiterated the importance of our sanctuary laws on protecting our vulnerable immigrant communities. But this is far from enough!
